Jonathan Ericsson: My 5 Stockholm favorites
Publish date: 2 May 2025
When Jonathan Ericsson decided to end his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings, he chose to move back to Sweden and settle in Stockholm. The 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship is a highlight of the year for him, and he shares some recommendations for things to do between games.
After almost 20 years on the other side of the Atlantic, Jonathan Ericsson chose to move back to Sweden. He could look back on a successful career, having played for Detroit’s pride, the Red Wings, at the highest level.
“We had previously lived in Södertälje, and my wife is from there, but when we moved back, we decided we wanted to live closer to a large city since we had gotten used to it. Also, we found a good house that we really fell for in Saltsjöbaden,” he says.
Even though Jonathan Ericsson no longer plays professionally, his passion for hockey remains intact — something especially noticeable during championship time.
“I will work as an ambassador for the Ice Hockey World Championship, and I’ll follow the tournament both at the arena and on TV. Being so close to home means even more excitement and a stronger pulse,” he says.
He hopes for great games filled with emotions, and even though there are many strong teams competing, he believes Sweden could have an edge.
“Usually there’s a dedicated group of fans who follow the national team at every championship, and now, playing at home, I hope for a vibrant home crowd and that we really get that home-field advantage,” says Jonathan Ericsson.
