A sweet, picturesque small town with plenty of history, just over an hour by car from Stockholm, built around the majestic <a id="875" linktype="page">Gripsholm Castle</a>. Gripsholm was a fortress in the 14th century and took its present form in the 1530s under King Gustav Vasa. The castle houses the Swedish State’s portrait collection In the warm months, you can reach the town on the historic steamship Mariefred. Launched in 1903, it has trafficked this route ever since. You can eat lunch on board in the beautiful dining saloon.Mariefred also has a narrow-gauge historical railway where you can enjoy a historic ride through the surrounding area. The charming town center has numerous quaint restaurants, cafés, and shops.

Nacka

Nacka is where big city and island meet. It is easy to get here by boat, car, bus, bicycle or the suburban Saltsjöbanan train, and the trip usually takes between 10 and 20 minutes from Stockholm proper.History buffs get their fill either at the Battlefield Museum HAMN, or have a fika at the 18th-century country estates Svindersvik and Stora Nyckelviken. If you&#x27;re into architecture, the designer hotel J at Nacka beach and the beautiful historic homes from the 20th century in Saltsjöbaden are sure make an impression. For art and culture, Dieselverkstaden is a creative space and exhibition hall well worth exploring, as are 20 newly-painted murals in the area that will make your jaw drop.For the outdoor types, Hellasgården and Velamsund’s nature reserves are classics that never go out of style.

Nynäshamn

It is said that Nynäshamn is the only place in Stockholm County where you can see the sea horizon from the mainland. The beautiful barren nature along the 1,000-km-long stretch of coast has also inspired many of Sweden’s best-known authors. Take a walk along the coastal Strandvägen, visit the Iron Age house in Körunda or the popular island of Landsort/Öja. Take a boat trip to the islands Nåttarö, Rånö and Ålö or try your hand at surfing, wakeboarding, jet-skiing, diving, sailing, paddling, climbing, hiking or golfing.

Ornate runestones, in effect ancient billboards with important messages written in runic alphabets, were a preferred mode of communication of the Vikings. Of the world&#x27;s 7500+ recorded rune stones over 2000 are located in Sweden, and they can be found in the woods all around the Stockholm area. But the biggest concentration of preserved runestones in the world can be found in Runriket just north of Stockholm. Runriket is located in the woods around Vallentunasjön and free for everyone to visit. But to make the best out of your Viking hike, start at the official park entrance at Jarlbankes bridge and work your way around the trail! Sweden’s first town, founded in the 10th century. Small-scale and pedestrian friendly, with charming wooden buildings by Lake Mälaren, less than an hour outside of Stockholm. Good selection of stores, cafés, restaurants and hotels, plus an interesting museum. The district is rich in rune stones, to fascinate history buffs. Sigtuna can be reached by train, bus, or boat from the center of Stockholm. Nearby is Skokloster Castle, a first-class attraction. Skokloster was the residence of one of Gustav II Adolf’s generals when Sweden was a superpower, and the castle interior from the mid 17th century has been kept completely intact. Steninge Palace and Rosersberg Palace is also situated close to Sigtuna.

Trosa

The picturesque town of Trosa, with its narrow alleys and charming shops, is a popular tourist destination. The low wooden building along Trosån to the outer pier contributes to this fact.The guest harbor (Gästhamnen) is a lively meeting place during the summer months. Visitors also come to Trosa to kayak, visit SPA, visit Tullgarn and Nynäs castles, see the Middle Age churches from the 1100s and 1200s, and to hike along the 900-km-long Sörmland footpath.

Tyresta National Park, 40 minutes from the city center, is one of the largest untouched woodlands in Sweden outside the alpine areas. The area has a beautiful virgin forest and was made a national park in 1993.The park has a 30-kilometer perimeter and a wide variety of unique plants and animals. Pack a picnic and take a walk in the wild, magical forest. Stop to pick berries or swim in one of the lakes.There are a café and a farm shop in Tyresta By and buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Also worth seeing are the exhibits at Naturum (Nationalparkernas hus). The building is shaped like a map of Sweden and is characterized by its eco-friendliness and natural materials.

Uppsala

Uppsala is Sweden’s fourth largest city and an important university town just north of Stockholm. Visit the three Iron Age royal burial mounds in Old Uppsala, the cathedral (Scandinavia’s largest) or Uppsala Castle. Uppsala is also home to a plethora of charming shops and cafés, as well as the home and gardens of nobleman and famous botanist Carl von Linné.
