Cafés in Gamla Stan

Take a fika-break in Gamla Stan. Here are some tips for cafés, bakeries, and ice cream shops in Stockholm's oldest district.

As is the case with most of Stockholm's districts, Gamla Stan (or Old Town) has its fair share of cafes. In other words perfect for a snack or coffee break in-between visits to The Royal Armoury and The Nobel Prize Museum. On the central Stortorget square alone, are there classic Stockholm cafés; Kaffekoppen, Chokladkoppen, and Grillska Huset.

Several of Stockholm's bakery chains are also found in Gamla Stan, like Fabrique and Bröd & Salt. You'll also find a Stikki Nikki ice cream café on Stora Nygatan.

Not surprisingly, being Stockholm's oldest district after all, Gamla Stan is also where you'll find the city's oldest bakery. Sundberg Konditori opened in 1785, on Drottninggatan. But the bakery moved to its current location on Järntorget in 1793, as it was closer to baker Gustav Adolf Sundbergs home. Coincidentally you'll also find one of Stockholm's youngest bakeries in Gamla Stan; American-inspired Panem on Stora Nygatan.
