Restaurants on Södermalm
Publish date: 22 August 2024
Trendy and bohemian Södermalm has plenty of great restaurants open for lunch and dinner. Here's a small selection.
During the early late-19th/early-20th century, Södermalm was considered a slum, housing impoverished workers living in squalor. Several large factories were located nearby; Barnängens Tekniska Fabrik chemical plant, Luma Lampfabrik, and Münchenbryggeriet brewery for example.
Today Stockholm's southernmost inner-city district ("söder" literally meaning "south") is often described as young and creative with a unique personality. This is also reflected in the local restaurant scene with many places opting for a real homey feeling, decorated with an artistic sense, as well as exciting lifestyle concepts.
The area of SoFo is a hotbed of popular restaurants. Here you'll find classic eatery Pelikan, Italian French bistro Café Nizza, family-friendly pizzeria Bananas, and restaurant-deli-bar Urban Deli.
Another large concentration of great restaurants is located at Hornstull where you'll be treated to Middle Eastern pizzas at Bitza, Indonesian-Swedish fusion at Warung, and the all-encompassing Tjoget (cocktail bar, beer hall, restaurant, and wine bodega in one).
And then there's of course Hornsgatan, one of the longest streets at Södermalm. Stretching over 2 kilometers, it's a good place to start if you're looking for a good place to eat. German bistro Liebling, prison-turned-restaurant Restaurang Häktet, and pasta house Gazza are all found on, or streets directly adjacent to, Hornsgatan.
Here are some examples of Södermalm's great restaurants.
