Basketball

Benjamin Holmqvist

Basketball was introduced in Sweden in the 1890’s but rose to prominence in 1945 when refugees from Latvia formed Sweden’s first club JKS. Since then basketball has become a mainstay in Sweden. In 2009 Jonas Jerebko made history as the first Swedish player to be drafted into the NBA, to The Detroit Pistons.

Stockholm has several successful clubs. On the women’s side, AIK and Alvik Basket compete in Basketligan, the highest league in basketball, and KFUM Central och KFUM Fryshuset Basket in Superettan (the second-tier division). AIK and Alvik Basket also have men’s teams that, along with Djurgården, play in Superettan. Basketball season lasts from October to March. Visit basket.se for more info about the teams, matches and how to get tickets.
