Ludwig van Beethoven called his eighth symphony his “little symphony in F”, comparing it to the longer sixth symphony; the eighth is more light-hearted, but not lightweight, however. Joseph Haydn’s F minor symphony known as La passione on the other hand is contrastingly dark and dramatic. In between the two symphonies, Kaija Saariahos Vers toi qui es si loin for violin and orchestra shines a light in the darkness.
