Handelsplatsen anlades under 700-talet och besöktes av resande från när och fjärran. Här finns en rik skatt av fornlämningar som grävts ut och undersökts av arkeologer och forskare sedan 1800-talet. Markerna har brukats sedan ännu äldre tider och är ännu ett levande kulturlandskap med betande djur. 1993 blev Birka upptagen på UNESCO:s världsarvslista. Birka är endast öppet under sommarsäsongen, maj-september, och nås lättast med Strömmas färjor från centrala Stockholm. Resan tar ungefär 2 timmar.

Fri entré för personer under 26 år och arbetssökande, samt för alla på fredagar.

Här finns en vacker kuperad parkmiljö, en botanisk trädgård, kaféer, slott och flera kulturhistoriskt intressanta byggnader.
Hagaparken, på den västra stranden, anlades 1771-1793 på initiativ av Gustav III. Parken har promenadvägar längs stränderna och vackra alléer. Här ligger många kulturhistoriskt intressanta byggnader; Gustav III:s paviljong, Koppartälten, Haga slott samt Fjärils- och Fågelhuset. Hagaparken är ett av Sveriges främsta exempel på engelska parker. Parkstilen växte fram i England som en motreaktion till den strikta barocka trädgården. Parken skulle i stället utgå från naturens förutsättningar.
Bellevueparken, vid den södra stranden är, som namnet antyder, högt beläget med utsikt över parkerna och Brunnsviken. Här finns också skulptören Carl Eldhs ateljé och museum. På den östra stranden ligger bland annat Bergianska trädgården och ett antal båtklubbar, samt Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet och Stockholms universitet.
Bryggartäppan på Södermalm är en påminelse om hur stadsdelen såg ut under det senare 1800-talet och tidiga 1900-talet. Små arbetsbostäder och fabriker skapar en unik miljö för barn att upptäcka och leka i, som hämtad ur Per Anders Fogelströms \"Mina drömmars stad\". Och om ni behöver en paus i leken finns det även ett sommarkafé som serverar fika och våfflor!

Den vackra färden tar inte ens 10 minuter. Redan under 1600-talet anordnades trafik över Stockholms innersta vatten med hjälp av roddbåtar. Men den första ”moderna" färjan började trafikera sträckan 1897 i samband med Stockholmsutställningen. Linje 82, som linjen heter idag, är en del av SL-trafiken i Stockholm, precis som buss, tunnelbana och spårvagn. Det innebär att alla SL-biljetter gäller ombord.
